乌鲁木齐，通称“乌市”，旧称迪化，是新疆维吾尔自治区的首府，是全疆政治、经济、文化、科教和交通中心。市域面积为14216.3平方公里，辖7区、1县，2014年末常住人口为353万人。“乌鲁木齐”是蒙古语，意为“优美的牧场”。

乌鲁木齐地处中国西北，亚欧大陆腹地，毗邻中亚各国，有“亚心之都”的称呼，自古以来是沟通东西商贸的重要枢纽。如今是世界上最内陆、距离海洋和海岸线最远的大型城市（2500公里）。

乌鲁木齐历史悠久，早在新石器时期，就有人类在这里繁衍生息。1763年乾隆扩建筑城，时称迪化。1884年迪化为新疆省省会，从此成为全疆的政治中心。1954年迪化改名乌鲁木齐，乌市是个多民族聚居的城市，世居民族有13个，少数民族49个。

乌鲁木齐是中国国家园林城市、全国双拥模范城市、中国优秀旅游城市、全国民族团结进步模范城市。2016年将建成全国文明城市，也是广义西北地区即西安、克拉玛依之后的第三文明城。

2016年2月23日，乌鲁木齐在CCTV“中国经济生活大调查”2015年度十大最具幸福感省会城市中名列第七。

Urumqi,with a population of about 2.1 million, is the capital of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of the People’s Republic of China, in the northwest of the country. Two thousand years ago Urumqi was an important town on the northern route of the Silk Road, a vast network of trade routes that also facilitated cultural exchanges throughout Eurasia, the city was renamed Urumqi, meaning”beautiful pasture” in the Mongolian language of the Junggar tribe.
